Global Intellectual Property Attorneys Murgitroyd Celebrate 40 Years in Business

The firm which was founded in 1975 when current Chairman Ian Murgitroyd started out as a sole trader in Glasgow, with the firm becoming a partnership in 1977 and then a limited company in 1993. Murgitroyd made history in 2001 by becoming the first IP attorneys to be part of a public company when its parent company floated on the London Stock Exchange (AIM Market).

The firm’s global headquarters is based in Glasgow and has grown to 15 global locations across 7 countries (UK, USA, Germany, France, Italy, Ireland and Finland). It has a staff of 238 and caters to clients from all industry sectors including engineering, ICT, life sciences, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, energy, food and drink, fashion and the music business, protecting their intellectual property interests globally through patents, trade marks, design rights and copyright.

Ian Murgitroyd commented: “I am delighted that we have reached 40 years in business and we are still going strong thanks to the hard work and dedication of all our staff without whom our growth would not have been possible.” His son Edward Murgitroyd, CEO, added: “I’m so proud of my father’s achievement, and indeed that of all our staff, as highlighted by my father. Our staff truly are the brightest and best and their commitment to providing a world-class service to our clients every single time is second to none”.

Asked about what he feels has driven the firm’s success, Ian Murgitroyd commented: “Thinking back, our success has been blessed with much good fortune on the way, but I feel that such success as we have enjoyed has been based on two principles: firstly, run the business to suit the client’s needs not your own and, secondly, employ people to do a job and trust them to get on and do it – simple principles which I believe differentiated us from our competitors and I hope will continue to do so over the next 40 years.”

Edward Murgitroyd emphasised the importance of the company’s core values to the success of the business: “My father founded this business on the core principles of honour, wisdom, anticipation and clarity and I see those operating principles as key to the current and future success of Murgitroyd – they provide the bedrock for innovation and advancement to take place, which are key to being flexible in the market and in responding to our clients’ needs”.

Murgitroyd’s CMO Jamie LeLiever outlined plans for the 40th anniversary celebrations: “On our 40th anniversary, we want to celebrate the people who have helped us to create the strong and vibrant entity that Murgitroyd is today – our talented and hardworking staff, past and present, and our diverse and ever-innovating client base who continue to help us shape our offering to the market. We’ll be providing some 40th anniversary surprises for our staff and there will also be some special giveaways for our clients”.

North Carolina-based LeLiever pointed out that even those who didn’t yet know Murgitroyd could also get involved in the celebrations: “We’ve got a whole lot going on on our social media channels this week and we encourage everyone to get involved, find out some more about our business, and win some great prizes along the way! See #murgitroyd40”.
