[PRESSWIRE] Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania – 3 February 2026 — Tanzania is leveraging responsible mining to drive development and attract investment, officials said at the 25th anniversary gala of Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) over the weekend.

Deputy Minister for Minerals, Dr Steven Kiruswa, praised GGML as a model of sustainable mining, noting its strong performance in tax compliance, job creation, community development, and environmental stewardship.

“GGML demonstrates how responsible mining, in partnership with government and communities, can support national development priorities and attract investment,” Dr Kiruswa said.

The gala, attended by senior government officials, diplomats, and business leaders from regional and international firms, highlighted GGML’s contributions to Tanzania’s economy through employment, taxes, and corporate social responsibility initiatives.

The event featured ‘Stori za Dhahabu’, a storytelling initiative showcasing lives positively impacted by GGML since its launch in 2000, along with an augmented reality (AR) legacy book combining narratives with digital content.

Terry Strong, Vice-President for AngloGold Ashanti’s Africa Business Unit and former GGML Managing Director, described the mine as one of the company’s best-performing operations in Africa.

“GGML’s operational discipline and long-term community engagement make it a benchmark for responsible mining,” he said.

As Tanzania continues reforms in the mining sector, officials said partnerships like GGML’s are essential to attract investment while ensuring sustainable and inclusive growth.

– Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) is Tanzania’s largest gold mine and one of the country’s most significant contributors to the mining sector, having operated continuously since 2000 in the Lake Zone.

– GGML is majority owned by AngloGold Ashanti, a global gold mining company with operations across Africa, the Americas and Australia.

– The mine has been a major source of employment, government revenue and foreign exchange earnings, while also supporting community development projects in health, education, water and infrastructure.
