Tanzania Says Infrastructure Drive Key to Delivering Africa’s Agenda 2063

Tanzania is advancing Africa’s long-term development blueprint, Agenda 2063, through large-scale investments in infrastructure, agriculture and human capital, Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba said on Tuesday.

Nchemba was representing President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the 43rd meeting of the Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee of the African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD), held virtually.

AUDA-NEPAD is the African Union’s technical implementing agency, mandated to coordinate regional and continental programmes aligned with Agenda 2063 – the bloc’s 50-year framework aimed at promoting inclusive growth, sustainable development and deeper integration across the continent.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, Nchemba joined the meeting from Magogoni in Dar es Salaam.

In his address, he cited flagship projects that he said are central to Tanzania’s contribution to continental development goals. These include the Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP), which is expected to generate 2,115 megawatts of electricity, significantly expanding the country’s power supply and supporting industrialisation.

He also highlighted progress on the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), which is designed to link Tanzania with Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo once completed.

The railway is expected to boost regional connectivity, facilitate trade and strengthen economic ties across East and Central Africa.

Nchemba said Africa has the potential to become “the best place to live” for present and future generations, but added that achieving that vision would require stronger collective action.

He urged African countries to promote sustainable environmental practices, enhance domestic resource mobilisation, curb illicit financial flows and make more effective use of the continent’s natural resources to finance Agenda 2063.

The meeting also marked a change in leadership, with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi handing over the chairmanship of the AUDA-NEPAD Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee to Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço.

Leaders from Egypt, Tanzania, Angola, Libya, South Africa, Ghana and Zimbabwe participated in the session, alongside African Development Bank President Sidi Ould Tah and Afreximbank President and Chairman George Elombi.
