[PRESSWIRE] Dodoma, Tanzania – 2 February 2026 — President Samia Suluhu Hassan—s government has recruited more than 8,400 health and education workers in her first 100 days in office and approved plans to hire a further 41,500 public servants, officials said on Tuesday, signalling an early push to expand service delivery and strengthen governance.
Ridhiwani Kikwete, minister of state in the President—s Office for Public Service Management and Good Governance, said 8,416 of the 12,000 workers recruited under a 100-day pledge had already reported to duty, including 3,694 teachers and 4,722 health workers.
Of those, 735 employees who met payroll deadlines have already received their January 2026 salaries, while a further 956 education officers and 305 health workers are completing processing and will be added to the payroll as they report, Kikwete told reporters in Dodoma.
The recruitment drive fulfils a commitment made by Samia after launching her election campaign, under which her administration pledged to create 12,000 public-sector jobs within 100 days. The posts included 5,000 health workers and 7,000 science and mathematics teachers.
Kikwete said the Public Service Recruitment Secretariat (PSRS) coordinated nationwide hiring through digital aptitude tests and interviews conducted in December 2025, with duty stations assigned in January 2026. Candidates who fail to report within 14 days risk forfeiting their posts, he said.
Beyond the initial intake, the government has now approved recruitment of an additional 41,500 public servants across multiple sectors, including healthcare, education, agriculture, fisheries, engineering, emergency services, immigration, prisons and policing.
The expansion comes as Tanzania, like many African economies, faces pressure to strengthen public services while tackling unemployment and skills shortages amid rapid population growth.
Kikwete also highlighted progress on governance reforms, saying the government has upgraded its e-Mrejesho digital feedback platform — launched in 2022 — to allow citizens to engage directly with leaders through a new —Sema na Kiongozi— (Speak to a Leader) feature. The system is used across ministries, agencies and local governments to handle complaints and service feedback.
In parallel, the state-backed Watumishi Housing Investment scheme has completed 54 housing units for public servants in hard-to-reach districts, with a further 78 homes budgeted for construction in the 2025/26 financial year.
Analysts say the early focus on recruitment, digital accountability and staff housing reflects a broader effort by Samia—s administration to link job creation with public-sector efficiency and service delivery — priorities closely watched by development partners and investors assessing governance capacity in East Africa.
