Athletes Give Chinese Dumplings a Try at the Youth Olympic Village Healthy Cooking Workshop

The menu on the tenth day of the workshop starts off with pork and vegetarian Chinese handmade dumplings and continues with a main course of stir-fried beef with seasonal vegetables followed by a dessert of watermelon, mint lime granita. Thiziri Douki from Algeria is meticulously shaping a Chinese dumpling at her work station as she sings to herself. “Cooking like this lets you use your imagination. Hopefully now, my mom will let me cook,” said Douki.

The Healthy Cooking Workshop, located in Block D2 Youth Olympic Village Square, is perhaps the most popular of all the Culture & Educational Programme (CEP) activities at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG). The programme aims to help young people understand the diverse culinary cultures of the world while gaining a better understanding of nutrition and proportion when preparing food. Best of all, the workshop provides participants with a fun, hands-on experience where they can eat the food they prepare and share it with others.

The Healthy Cooking Workshop has two sessions everyday at 11:00a.m.-12:00p.m. in the morning and 6:00p.m.-7:00p.m. at night with 20 places available for each session. The workshop has proven a hit with the YOG athletes and the places fill up very quickly. “We have seven cuisines on the menu including Greek, Thai, Chinese, French and Middle Eastern with popular dishes like salmon prawn spaghetti, Thai curry chicken with rice and Chinese dumplings,” said DiaoXiaopei, the Vice Manager of the Healthy Cooking Workshop. “The passion we are getting from the athletes is completely beyond all my expectations.”

The head chef of the Healthy Cooking Workshop, Shi Yi studied and worked in the Intercontinental Hotel of Dubai and Australia and flew back to Nanjing especially for the workshop. He said, “I hope the young people keep away from junk food and are able to cook some simple and nutritional food for themselves and their families.”
