Wildlife Tourism Drives Visitor Growth in Tanzania

The upward trend is expected to strengthen further once December data are compiled, as the festive season traditionally attracts higher levels of international and domestic travel.

The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Hassan Abbasi, revealed the figures in Dar es Salaam after opening a special wildlife exhibition organised by the Tanzania Wildlife Authority (TAWA).

National statistics show that between January and November 2025, Tanzania welcomed approximately 173,000 more international visitors than in the corresponding period last year, reflecting growing confidence in the destination despite global economic and social challenges.

“The data clearly demonstrate that the tourism sector remains resilient and on a solid growth path,” Dr Abbasi said, dismissing claims circulating in public discourse that visitor numbers have declined.

He added that performance across key attractions has been particularly encouraging, with TAWA reporting an 18 per cent increase in international visitors and a 40 per cent rise in domestic tourism at sites under its management.

Dr Abbasi said the ongoing wildlife exhibition, held under the theme “Funga Mwaka Kijanja, Talii” (End the Year Smartly, Tour), forms part of a broader national campaign to promote tourism during the festive season.

Running from December 20, 2025 to January 5, 2026 at the Sabasaba Grounds in Dar es Salaam, the exhibition brings together conservation and tourism institutions from across the country and features live wildlife displays alongside educational conservation exhibits.

TAWA Acting Director General Mlage Kabange said the event has been attracting hundreds of visitors daily, offering an accessible and engaging experience for families and tourists alike, while reinforcing Tanzania’s reputation as a premier wildlife destination.
