UK backs Tanzania’s environmental and climate initiatives

[PRESSWIRE] DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania – 2026-03-08 — The United Kingdom reaffirmed support for Tanzania’s environmental and climate initiatives through cooperation with government agencies.

The pledge was made during a meeting between Richard Muyungi, permanent secretary in the Vice-President’s Office for Union and Environment, and Euan Davidson of the British Embassy’s Sustainable Environment Programme.

Muyungi outlined government strategies for climate action and environmental conservation under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, noting plans require development partner collaboration.

Priorities include environmental protection and climate resilience under the national Vision 2050 agenda.

He said Tanzania has established carbon trading regulations and the National Carbon Monitoring Centre, which operates with a board and technical committee to oversee projects.

The centre will monitor carbon initiatives and support participation in global carbon markets.

Muyungi also highlighted clean cooking technology programmes aimed at reducing reliance on traditional fuels and improving environmental and public health outcomes.

Davidson said the UK is ready to cooperate on blue economy initiatives, carbon markets, clean energy and climate mitigation.

“The UK Embassy stands ready to support Tanzania in implementing its climate and green energy plans,” he said.

The partnership is expected to strengthen cooperation on climate action and sustainable development.
