Tanzanian MPs back Governance and Infrastructure Reforms

The MPs were contributing to the debate on the President’s address delivered at the inauguration of the 13th Parliament on November 14, 2026, a session that outlined priorities on governance, infrastructure, education, energy access, and national stability.

Gairo MP Ahmed Shabiby (CCM) urged public officials to fully support the reform agenda by prioritising professionalism and the national interest, warning that misuse of public resources undermines development gains.

“We are witnessing rising levels of corruption in various sectors. Some officials are fearless and boldly engaging in embezzlement. Today, communities are more enlightened and can easily identify wealth acquired illicitly,” Mr Shabiby said.

He called on Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba to intensify action against corrupt or negligent officials, including acting on public complaints and ensuring accountability through legal channels. Analysts say the emphasis reflects growing public scrutiny and expectations around transparency in Tanzania’s reform programme.

Supporting the call, Zainab Abdallah, Special Seats MP for Youth (Pemba North), urged civil servants to uphold integrity and honour public trust. She praised the Prime Minister’s regular workplace forums, saying they have reinforced discipline and clarified performance expectations across government.

She also urged continued firm action against “lazy and unprepared public servants who sabotage government efforts”.

In her inaugural address, President Samia underscored the centrality of the rule of law to national development.

“To ensure citizens benefit from the country’s resources and receive the services they deserve, we will direct our efforts towards fighting corruption, embezzlement, negligence, and unethical conduct. We cannot allow a few individuals to undermine national progress through selfish interests,” she said.
