Tanzanian leaders urge youth to defend peace, unity and national development

Speaking at a student conference in Dar es Salaam on Friday, Tanzania’s Minister of State in the President’s Office for Parliamentary Affairs and Coordination, Palamagamba Kabudi, urged youths to safeguard peace and avoid turning disagreements into hostility.

“There is no alternative country like Tanzania,” Kabudi told students attending the conference organised by the Tanzania Higher Learning Institutions Students Organisation (TAHLISO).

“If you destroy this country, there is no other country to flee to and be welcomed with open arms as you are here,” he said.

The conference, held under the theme “Never Again: Let Us Love, Protect and Safeguard Our Country,” brought together university students and youth leaders to discuss patriotism, peace and national cohesion.

Kabudi encouraged young people to deepen their understanding of Tanzania’s history and development through learning and public debate, saying constructive engagement among youths had declined in recent years.

He criticised what he described as a growing tendency to replace reasoned discussion with insults and hostility, urging students and academics to revive a culture of informed debate.

The minister also reflected on key moments in Tanzania’s post-independence history, including the 1964 army mutiny, the collapse of the East African Community in 1977, the Kagera War against Uganda and the transition to multiparty politics in the 1990s.

Despite those challenges, Tanzania remained stable because of the patriotism and unity of its citizens, he said.

Kabudi added that Tanzania inherited limited infrastructure at independence and had built major national institutions, including the University of Dar es Salaam, largely through domestic efforts.

He said the government was continuing to invest in sectors such as education and healthcare under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration, while the “Never Again” initiative aimed to protect the country’s development gains and stability.

Also speaking at the event, Minister of State in the President’s Office responsible for Youth Development, Joel Nanauka, described peace and social cohesion as central to Tanzania’s Vision 2050 development agenda.

He urged Tanzanians to reject discrimination based on religion, ethnicity or political affiliation in order to achieve the country’s long-term economic and social goals.

Nanauka said the Vision 2050 framework is built around creating an inclusive and sustainable economy supported by measurable development targets.

TAHLISO president Godfrey Kiliba said young people were committed to defending Tanzania’s peace and stability.

“The message of ‘Never Again’ reflects the commitment of young people to protecting the country’s peace,” he said.

Kiliba added that student leaders planned to expand the campaign across educational institutions in Dar es Salaam and other parts of the country to encourage patriotism and civic responsibility among youths.
