[PRESSWIRE] DODOMA, Tanzania – 2026-03-08 — Tanzania marked the 29th anniversary of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA), highlighting regional cooperation in sustainable ocean resource use.
The organisation, founded March 7, 1997, promotes economic cooperation among Indian Ocean states in maritime security, blue economy development, trade and investment, fisheries, tourism, disaster management, women’s economic empowerment and science and technology.
As a founding member, Tanzania views the Indian Ocean as a driver of economic and social development.
Baraka Luvanda, deputy permanent secretary in the Vice-President’s Office for Union and Environment, said IORA has advanced sustainable ocean resource use for more than two decades.
“These efforts aim to ensure Indian Ocean resources are protected and utilised sustainably for present and future generations,” Luvanda said.
The Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation Ministry organised anniversary events including jogging and tree planting to promote environmental conservation and community well-being under the theme “IORA Improves Lives.”
Luvanda said the government is strengthening the blue economy through improved infrastructure such as ports, research and innovation and regional cooperation.
He urged citizens to support environmental conservation and regional cooperation to ensure natural resources drive prosperity and sustainable development.
