The project, implemented by the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), involves the acquisition of 2D seismic data around Lake Eyasi, covering a planned 914 kilometres of survey lines.
Unlike the first phase, which relied on vibration-based technology, the current phase uses controlled underwater detonations to generate seismic signals that will be analysed to determine potential drilling locations.
Project Manager and TPDC geophysicist Sindi Maduhu said the work is being conducted under close regulatory oversight to ensure compliance with national energy policies, environmental standards and community engagement requirements.
The Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA) is overseeing operations, while the contractor, Africa Geophysical Services (AGS), has recruited a significant number of local residents, ensuring community participation and skills transfer.
Preliminary findings from earlier research have been encouraging, with geological studies confirming oil-bearing rock formations and pointing to the basin’s commercial potential.
Located along the Eastern Branch of the Great East African Rift System, the Eyasi–Wembere Basin shares geological similarities with proven petroleum regions such as Uganda’s Albertine Graben and Kenya’s Lokichar Basin.
Government officials say the project underscores Tanzania’s long-term commitment to energy security, responsible resource development and economic diversification.
Notes to Editors
· Tanzania has launched Phase II of the Eyasi–Wembere oil and gas exploration project, led by the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC), to assess hydrocarbon potential in the Lake Eyasi area.
· The project involves 914 kilometres of 2D seismic surveying under strict regulatory oversight by the Petroleum Upstream Regulatory Authority (PURA), with environmental and community safeguards in place.
· Geological studies indicate promising oil-bearing formations, reinforcing Tanzania’s long-term strategy to strengthen energy security and diversify the economy.
