Tanzania Govt Demands Accountability in Public Projects

[PRESSWIRE] Dar es Salaam, Tanzania – 2026-02-15 — Prime Minister Dr Mwigulu Nchemba has directed contractors working on government projects to ensure that public funds are used strictly for their intended purposes and that project implementation delivers value for money.

PM Nchemba issued the directive during an inspection of the Mkata Power Substation in Handeni District, Tanga Region, where he also laid the foundation stone for the substation and associated transmission infrastructure.

Addressing residents, he said government funds must correspond with actual work completed and warned contractors against diverting funds for other activities, practices that delay development and deny citizens essential services.

“We want to see value for money in every project. The amount of money received must match the work done,” he said.

He cited reported misuse of funds, including contractors applying project allocations toward personal debts or overseas activities.

The prime minister vowed strict action against those responsible and directed the Prevention and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB) to investigate and ensure legal accountability.

Regarding the newly launched projects, Dr Nchemba instructed the Minister for Energy, Deogratius Ndejembi, to follow up on pending contractor claims to avoid delays, stressing that reliable electricity is essential to support existing and emerging industries nationwide.

He also condemned irregularities at health and vocational training projects, including the use of substandard materials and waste of construction supplies.

PM Nchemba ordered that the cost of wasted materials be recovered from responsible officials’ salaries and disciplinary action initiated without transfers.

Earlier, he officially opened an intensive care unit (ICU) at Handeni Town Council Hospital, constructed at a cost of 426 million shillings, which will reduce hardship for residents who previously travelled more than 160 kilometres for critical care.
