Ambassador Matinyi made the commitment after presenting his credentials to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in Algiers, formally assuming his role as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United Republic of Tanzania to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
According to a statement issued by the Embassy of Tanzania in Algeria, the ambassador said expanding economic cooperation would be a key priority during his tenure.
“Our primary focus will be on amplifying trade and investment, particularly in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, the pharmaceutical industry, energy, mining, tourism and higher education,” the statement said.
The embassy noted that Tanzania is also seeking to strengthen collaboration with Algeria in defence and security, science and technology, research, innovation and cultural exchange as part of broader efforts to deepen bilateral relations.
Ambassador Matinyi thanked Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan for entrusting him with the diplomatic assignment, becoming Tanzania’s fourth ambassador to Algeria.
He described relations between the two countries as being rooted in a shared history and solidarity forged during Africa’s liberation struggles, saying the longstanding partnership provides a strong foundation for expanded cooperation.
“The enduring spirit of solidarity continues to guide both nations and offers significant potential for strengthening our bonds through our common values,” Ambassador Matinyi said. “I arrive with a clear mandate from my President to enhance ties between our two friendly nations for the benefit of our beloved peoples.”
He also praised Algeria’s regional influence and economic potential, expressing confidence that both countries could unlock new opportunities for cooperation under the leadership of President Tebboune.
“Under the exceptional leadership of President Tebboune, coupled with Algeria’s considerable economic capabilities and Pan-African spirit, there are promising avenues for expanding our cherished bilateral cooperation,” he said.
The ambassador further conveyed Tanzania’s appreciation to the Algerian government and people for their continued support in strengthening relations between the two countries.
“I look forward to collaborating closely with the government of Algeria to translate these opportunities into tangible benefits for both Tanzanians and Algerians,” he added.
While economic ties remain relatively modest, trade between the two countries has been growing steadily in recent years.
According to data from the Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC), bilateral trade reached approximately US$5.7 million in 2024. Tanzania exported goods worth about US$5.39 million to Algeria during the year, with coffee accounting for the largest share of exports, followed by float glass and specialised machinery.
The OEC data shows that Tanzanian exports to Algeria have grown at an average annual rate of 40.9 per cent over the past five years, rising from US$972,000 in 2019 to US$5.39 million in 2024.
The growth highlights expanding commercial links between East and North Africa as both countries seek to strengthen intra-African trade and investment under the framework of regional and continental economic integration initiatives.
