Connected Digital Economy Catapult Joins Energy Midata Taskforce

The Catapult’s role will be to assist the Government in developing a blueprint for a new industry-wide API, which will allow energy consumption data to be automatically accessed by consumers and, with their consent, by third party organisations authorised by them.  In particular the Catapult will also coordinate the specification of the API and the activity related to maximising consumer trust.

One of the potential benefits is to make it easier for customers, who have given consent for their data to be shared, to switch energy providers by providing accurate, personalised comparisons. But it is hoped more innovations will stem from increased access to this data, especially from SMEs, such as products and services which promote energy efficiency and reducing costs to consumers.

The taskforce is backed by the Department for Energy and Climate Change and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, and will involve major energy companies. Other key members of the taskforce include Ofgem, consumer groups and app developers. After an initial discovery phase, the group will report back to ministers on its progress by September.

Dr Maurizio Pilu, Partnerships Director at the Connected Digital Economy Catapult, said: “This is a great example of how the Digital Catapult, through collaborations such as these, can help to unlock key industry challenges and accelerate innovation for the benefit of businesses and consumers.”

Consumer Minister Jo Swinson said: “Making it easier for consumers to compare quotes from energy suppliers is the best way to make sure they are getting a fair deal. That is why it is great that the Digital Catapult is working with industry on a new system that allows the fast transfer of data to comparison sites.

“I’m pleased that the suppliers are working together to bring this in and that the Digital Catapult is lending its expertise on the issues involved.”

Energy Secretary Edward Davey said: “Putting people in control of their energy use means they can find the best deal possible and cut the cost of their energy bill.

“That’s why the Government wants consumers to have automatic access to their energy rates and consumption data, making it easier and quicker to compare quotes and switch energy suppliers.”
