Breakthrough Trial Results Prove that Probiotics Can Ease Symptoms of Baby Colic

The study, commissioned by the Paediatric Gastroenterology Unit at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences and Queensland Children’s Medical Research Institute, Royal Children’s Hospital, involved infants aged two weeks to four months who had been diagnosed with colic. The infants were randomly assigned to receive a placebo or newly-developed probiotic mixture for 30 days. Parents were asked to keep symptom diaries to record the results.

Infants who took the probiotic saw a significant improvement in symptoms and in some cases symptoms had completely resolved.

Average daily crying time was reduced by at least half for 82.6% of infants in the probiotic group after seven days. Furthermore, 39% experienced a resolution of symptoms.

The seven strain probiotic formula used in the study can be exclusively found in Bio-Kult Infantis, which launches in the UK in August 2014 and has been developed by Protexin Healthcare.

Dr Mayur R Joshi, Medical Advisor for Probiotics International Ltd (Protexin): “It has long been postulated that altered gut flora is a contributory factor in the development of infantile colic. This trial helps to support that theory and indeed helps to support the use of certain probiotics in the management of colic.”

“The study supports the case for larger trials to see whether probiotics can prevent infant colic (as opposed to treat it) and to ascertain further information such as optimal dosing or whether there is a dose dependent effect at all.”

Bio-Kult Infantis contains the seven strain mixture used in the trial, and also includes prebiotics, Vitamin D3 and is high in Omega 3.
