Teymin sem taka þátt munu fá þrjár áskoranir sem munu reyna á skapandihæfni þeirra. Til aðstoðar fá þau í hendurnar gögn og upplýsingar frá gagnagrunninum Copernicus ásamt gögnum frá gervihnattakerfiunum Galileo og EGNOS. Markmiðið er að teymin útbúi byltingakenndar lausnir sem geta greitt úr vandamálum framtíðar.
Hvert teymi sem tekur þátt velur aðeins eina áskorun en áskoranirnar þrjár sem hægt er að velja um eru eftirfarandi:
- Öryggi á hafi, Þátttakendur hanna búnaði eða þjónustu sem gera fraktskipum, skemmtiferðaskipum og fiskiskipum kleift að sigla um norðurhöfin á öruggari máta.
- Líf á landi, Þátttakendur hanna búnaði eða þjónustu sem gerir mannlegum samfélögum, plöntum og dýralífi kleift að aðlagast betur að loftslagi norðurskautsins.
- Verndun lífríkis, Þátttakendur munu hanna búnaði eða þjónustu sem stuðla að verndun líffræðilegan fjölbreytileika og vistkerfis á norðurslóðum.
Lausnir sem skapast með þessum áskorunum á norðurskautinu eru einnig hægt að nýta og aðlaga til að leysa sambærileg vandamál sem snúa að löndum utan norðurskautsins.
Skipuleggjandi viðburðarins, Startup Iceland, er fyrirtæki sem er ekki rekið í hagnaðarskyni og heldur reglulega viðburði sem tengjast nýsköpun og frumkvöðlastarfsemi. Markmið hjá Startup Iceland er að skapa öflugt vistkerfi sprotafyrirtækja hérlendis.
Hinir heppnu sigurvegarar frá þessum fallega og einstaka landi munu fá 5000 evrur að launum ásamt því að fá boð í FutureCast hlaðvarpið á Youtube-rás Reykjavik Grapevine. Þátttakendur sem lenda í 2. og 3. sæti munu einnig fá 3000 og 2000 evrur hver um sig.

Making the most of EU Space data in the Arctic Region
Dive into some of the critical challenges faced in the Arctic with the 2nd CASSINI Hackathon.
The 2nd CASSINI Hackathon, scheduled for 5-7 November, is gearing up to be a fantastic event which will tackle a very important global challenge head on. From day one, participants in 10 locations across Europe will have the opportunity to leverage EU Space data to Connect the Arctic.
With the mission of creating new travel routes, safeguarding wildlife, assisting native human communities and preserving natural habitats, teams will be presented with 3 challenges which will test their creative skills from day one. Using data and information from Copernicus, signals and data from Galileo and EGNOS, as well as secure connectivity technologies, they will imagine game-changing solutions and problem solve for the future!
To ensure total focus and dedication, each participating team will be asked to choose just one challenge for their shot at the top spot. The three challenges to choose from are as follows:
- Safe passage at sea: Participants will design products, devices or services that could enable container ships, cruise liners and fishing trawlers to navigate safely across Nordic Seas.
- Life on land: Participants will design products, devices or services that could enable human societies, plants and wildlife to better adapt to the Arctic climate.
- Caring for our wildlife: Participants will design products, devices or services that could help protect biodiversity and the natural habitats of wildlife in the Arctic.
The solutions created while solving these unique challenges in the Arctic can also be used and adapted to solve similar challenges faced by countries outside of the Arctic circle. Each of the 10 European Hackathon organisers are invited to highlight the local application of these solutions to their participants.
In Iceland, this year’s Hackathon will explore a variety of local issues which could be tackled with the use of data and signals from Copernicus, Galileo and EGNOS. The organiser, Startup Iceland is a non-profit organisation that regularly hosts events related to entrepreneurship and innovation. The goal of the organisation is to create a sustainable start-up eco-system that will nurture Icelandic companies for years to come.
Lucky winners from this beautiful and unique country will receive 5,000 Euros and be featured in the FutureCast videocast on the ‘Reykjavik Grapevine‘ Youtube channel. The 2nd and 3rd placed participants will also win 3,000 and 2,000 Euros respectively.
