“The cost-savings of VoIP have already been proven by companies such as Skype. Mobiboo has gone one step further to replicate a true mix of traditional mobile, DECT and landline phone services to provide both residential and business customers with a credible alternative, thus giving real value for money. In a nut shell, a mobile number, DECT functionality and landline pricing with the additional coverage available with WiFi.” explained Richard Newsome, Commercial Director at Mobiboo.
Mobiboo is launching its service with two devices; UTStarcom’s F3000 – a clamshell-design WiFi handset that measures 85 x 43 x 22mm and weighs approximately 90g and the Mobiboo Dashboard PC phone. The F3000 features a full-color, 1.8” LCD screen, polyphonic ringtones, text messaging capability, talk-time of up to three hours and stand-by time of approximately 75 hours whilst Mobiboo Dashboard additionally provides the ability to send instant messages and files to other Mobiboo Dashboard users.
The service will enable users to make calls via UTStarcom’s F3000 whenever they are in range of an open WiFi hotspot or wireless router. Mobiboo has also partnered with The Cloud, Europe’s leading hotspot provider, giving good hotspot coverage in the UK. Mobiboo VoIP has significant cost-saving implications, both domestically and when travelling abroad, as international roaming charges become non-existent.
“We are delighted to be partnering with a major mobile VoIP handset manufacturer,” added Mr Newsome. “UTStarcom gives us credibility around the world and their new handsets look fantastic. The reliability of the device is excellent and we feel that it is the first WiFi handset to really bridge the divide between VoIP and cellular mobile. Putting the right device with the right service is key to providing the best customer proposition.”
John McCall, UK Manager at UTStarcom, explains the growth in demand for services like Mobiboo’s: “There has been a massive growth in demand for mobile Voice-over-IP devices as the number of public WiFi hotspots and prevalence of wireless routers in people’s homes and offices increases. The Mobiboo service enables consumers to reap the benefits of VoIP, whilst retaining the familiarity of the traditional mobile experience.”

Mobiboo was established in 2005 to provide mobile services using VoIP. Companies such as Skype have demonstrated the massive potential of VoIP services – Mobiboo is taking this one step further by making VoIP truly mobile.
Like Skype, Mobiboo enables customers to make calls over the Internet using a softphone. Unlike Skype, Mobiboo is partnering with UTStarcom to enable customers to make calls via a mobile handset whenever they are in range of an open WiFi hotspot or wireless router. Furthermore, Mobiboo is regulated by Ofcom and is the UK’s first commercial WiFi VoIP network operator.
