He was a well-educated intellectual who authored several books, and is remembered as a Pan-Africanist. He is also the father of Kenya’s fourth and current President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In a presidency spanning 14 years, from 1963 until his death in 1978, Kenyatta was considered an icon to his people and well known for his trademark slogan, Harambee, a Swahili word to mean working or pulling together.
